Born on the family ranch near New Underwood, Walter Dale Miller became a prominent Republican member of South Dakota's House of Representatives from 1967 through 1986, becoming the first person in state history to serve as speaker, speaker pro tempore, majority leader, assistant majority leader and majority whip. Elected as the state’s first full-time Lieutenant Governor in 1986, he became Governor in 1993 following the tragic plane crash which took the lives of Governor George S. Mickelson and other state officials. “Walter Dale Miller: In His Own Words” features a collection of interviews and speeches by former Governor Walter Dale Miller from the SDPB archives. Former South Dakota Governor Walter Dale Miller’s Memorial Service was held on October 5th, 2015 in the Rotunda of the South Dakota State Capitol. Speakers included South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard, Attorney General Marty Jackley, family and colleagues. The 2-disc set runs approx. 90 minutes.
